featured project: the brinneman residence

info: James and Julia Brinneman approached Cornerstone looking for a new vision for their underutilized backyard.  They wanted a comfortable and casual outdoor space where friends and family could gather.  A couple challenges presented themselves:  How this space was going to connect the house and woodland behind, and the engineering of the grade to allow allow for wheelchair accessibility.

Cornerstone met all of the Brinneman’s needs and went beyond their expectations.  Three main spaces were created; a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, and unique outdoor rooms.  The pergola provides an intimate space opening up to the fire pit area.  The kitchen is creatively placed in an unused space tucked under the first story porch deck on the house.  A deck space cantilevers out into the ravine behind the house and gives the sense of being up in the tree canopy, as well as having featured lighting for nighttime enjoyment.  The plant selections are hardy varieties and provide a nice foreground for the lush woodland, as well as adding color to the backdrop of the outdoor spaces.

“Every detail was considered, from the difficulty of the wheelchair access on the sloping lot, to the aesthetically pleasing plant selection that is hardy and easy care, while being a natural transition to the backdrop of the wooded ravine.”

“Cornerstone took an area and added daily value to our lives with our family and friends through the creation of an outdoor space we will use and enjoy for many years.”
